IME General (group)

• IME Group is a major diversified business conglomerate in Nepal, founded by Chandra Prasad Dhakal and Hem Raj Dhakal. It started in the 1990s with freight and remittance‑related activities, and has since expanded into many sectors. 

• The group’s website lists key sectors of operations: Remittance, Banking & Insurance, Digital Finance, Energy, Infrastructure, ICT, Sports, Manufacturing, Trading. i

• A milestone: In 2001 they began the remittance business (International Money Express – IME Remit) which grew to a very large network (5+ million households benefitted, 35,000+ payout locations cited) in Nepal.

Insurance Business Within IME Group

• Under the “Insurance” business vertical of IME Group, there are at least two related companies:

  • IME General Insurance Limited (non‑life/general insurance) — originally NB Insurance Company, acquired and rebranded under IME. 

  • IME Life Insurance Co. Ltd. (life insurance) — established more recently, with IME Group as a promoter.  

• On the non‑life side, IME General Insurance eventually merged with Prudential Insurance Company Limited to form IGI Prudential Insurance Limited (see earlier description) to comply with regulatory capital requirements.
